How long a sports certificate lasts
The validity starts on the issue date. These are the rules in Italy.
| Certificate | Validity | Who issues it |
|---|---|---|
| Non-competitive | 1 year | Your GP, your paediatrician or a sports medicine doctor |
| Competitive | 1 year, 2 years for some sports | A sports medicine doctor at an authorised centre |
Sources: DM 18 February 1982 (competitive) and DM 24 April 2013 with the guidelines of 8 August 2014 (non-competitive). This tool gives information only. Check the date with your doctor or your club.
Questions about sports certificates
How long is a non-competitive sports certificate valid?
One year from the issue date. A certificate issued on 10 March 2026 is valid until 10 March 2027. If the certificate prints a different expiry date, that date counts.
Is a competitive certificate valid for 1 or 2 years?
Usually 1 year. For some sports the rules allow 2 years, and the doctor can always set a shorter period. The validity is written on the certificate: choose the option that matches it.
Who can issue a sports medical certificate?
Your GP, your paediatrician or a sports medicine doctor can issue the non-competitive certificate. Only a sports medicine doctor at an authorised centre can issue the competitive one.
Does my gym need a medical certificate?
The law does not require one for free amateur exercise, but many gyms and sports facilities ask for it in their rules. Clubs affiliated with a sports federation or a sports promotion body require it. Ask your facility.
What happens when the certificate expires?
You cannot take part in activities that require it until you renew it. Book the visit about a month before the expiry date, so you do not miss a training session.
